MY Journey
My name is Kai Greene, and I’m a professional soccer player currently in my 9th year as a pro. Over the course of my career, I’ve logged more than 20,000 professional minutes and played in over 250 games. But none of this came easy—so let me take you through the journey of how it all started.
I played Division I soccer at Seton Hall University from 2012 to 2015, where I held down every position on the field except goalkeeper. After graduating, I wasn’t drafted, and I wasn’t invited to any combines. Still, I knew I wanted to keep chasing the dream.
I went to open tryouts across the U.S., and even tried my luck in Germany. I gave it everything at tryouts for Orlando City B and Miami FC (NASL), but didn’t make the cut. It was discouraging, but I wasn’t ready to walk away.
In 2016, I finally got my shot. After trying out for RGV Toros in South Texas, I signed my first professional contract that March. I spent three seasons with the Toros from 2016 to 2018.
Following RGV, I joined San Antonio FC for two seasons. In 2019, I played every minute of every game—setting a USL league record of 3,060 minutes across 34 consecutive matches.
In 2021, I played for Oakland Roots before spending three seasons with Monterey Bay FC, where I had the honor of captaining the team in my final year there in 2024.
Now in 2025, I’ve come full circle—back with the Oakland Roots and still pushing forward.
If there’s one lesson I’ve learned, it’s that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel… if you’re willing to work for it. Getting cut from multiple tryouts could’ve ended my career before it started—but I kept going. That mindset gave me a pro career, a USL record, leadership experience, and a deep understanding of the game.
Today, I’m using that knowledge to give back through Prodigy Select—a platform I created to support players from all backgrounds in pursuing their own goals.
